Cologne’s “Musiknacht” – Night of Music 2013
Cologne’s Musiknacht (Night of Music) festival has been a permanent part of the “Lange Nächte” (Long Nights) series for some time. Since 2005 it has presented the city’s top-class independent music scene. The many regionally and internationally active soloists and ensembles have given a strong voice to independent music in Cologne. For the first time at Musiknacht 2013 there will be an overall theme for the event: “Eine Stadt - Paradies und Hölle”.
As always at Cologne’s Musiknacht, visitors will experience concerts from different genres including old music, new music, jazz, experimental and world music. The theme has inspired a multitude of experiments, approaches and programmes by musicians from all categories and groupings. What they have created is a top-class selection of diverse short concerts. The musical wealth of Cologne will be reflected in over 100 sets lasting 45 minutes each.
The concerts will incorporate traditional programmatic forms such as works paying homage to great composers and examinations of musical epochs. However, the musical recycling of materials that are no longer popular will also have its place. Reflections on death, transience and the past are to be found in all musical categories. The theme “Remainders, Relics and Reminiscences” seems to be a common thread running through music history, and it promises to be the inspiration for an exciting Musiknacht 2013 in Cologne.
Cologne’s musicians will interpret, experiment and improvise at 25 different concert venues. It will truly be worthwhile to join the journey — from location to location, from epoch to epoch and from one soundscape to the next.
Tickets for Musiknacht 2013 will cost €18 in advance (including the advance booking fee and a regional public transportation ticket).
