COLOAN Exhibition - Thomas Baldischwyler

An Exhibition on Art, Loans, and Cultural Memory
------------------------------------------------

With “COLOAN,” artist Thomas Baldischwyler has created a site-specific exhibition for the artothek Köln. For this project, he combines his own works with signed editions and materials related to artists such as Blinky Palermo, Claes Oldenburg, Sigmar Polke, Cosima von Bonin, Jutta Koether, and Otto Piene. The result is a multi-layered collage of personal references and art-historical traces.

The title plays on the English term “loan,” which means both a financial loan and a loan of an object. Building on this, the exhibition explores what ownership and access to art mean today. At the same time, it recalls the history of art libraries: Since the 1960s and 1970s, they have made it possible to borrow art and experience it in everyday life without having to buy it.

Thomas Baldischwyler was born in 1974 in Lage/Lippe and lives and works in Hamburg. In his cross-media projects, he frequently explores places, their histories, and the question of how cultural memory is formed.
