Dragons: Myth and Reality

Mythical Creatures at the Intersection of Art, Culture, and Natural History
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

From March 4 to June 6, 2027, the special exhibition “Dragons: Myth and Reality” at the Schnütgen Museum will focus on a creature that has captured people’s imaginations for millennia. In myths, legends, art, and pop culture, dragons appear as fearsome foes, powerful symbols of protection, or enigmatic mythical creatures.

The exhibition shows how differently dragons are perceived in various cultures. While in Europe they often embody threat and evil, in China, Japan, and Korea they frequently represent positive cosmic forces and the balance of nature. This creates a multifaceted perspective on a creature that oscillates between fear, strength, admiration, and identification.

On display are outstanding works of art and cultural artifacts, scientific exhibits, rare documents from the history of science, fossils, and taxidermied animals. The exhibition combines European art from the Middle Ages with East Asian art and illustrates how conceptions of the dragon have evolved from antiquity to the present day.

“Dragons: Myth and Reality” is a collaboration between the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt, the Schnütgen Museum, and the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne. The exhibition appeals to children, teenagers, and adults alike and invites visitors to rediscover the dragon in an informative, playful, and entertaining way.
