The street art festival "WASTA - Wallraf Street Art" will take place in Cologne from 5 to 15 September 2024 and transform the city into an open art gallery. 13 contemporary artists have explored the intellectual legacy of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf and are presenting their works at various locations that are accessible to all. These installations and inscriptions bring the historical figure of Wallraf to life in a creative way and create a link between past and present.
An impressive feature of the festival is the way in which it uses public space to make art accessible to everyone. Art installations that focus on aspects of Wallraf's passion for artworks, antique objects and the city of Cologne offer links to current social challenges such as climate change, feminism and knowledge transfer. The works are not only visually appealing, but also encourage reflection and dialogue.
The festival is organised by the Institute of Art History at the University of Cologne and the University and City Library, with historical content provided by the Chair of Early Modern History. A diverse supporting programme, curated by students from the University of Cologne, includes workshops, guided tours and performances that invite visitors to engage with Wallraf's legacy and the exhibited works of art. This emphasises the entertaining and simultaneously educational character of the festival.
