From 31th of August to 21th of September 2019 the international CityLeaks Urban Art Festival will take place for the fifth time. This time the festival will focus on the Cologne-Ehrenfeld district. There, the CityLeaks Festival dives into the street space, into its streets, sidewalks, unused areas or empty spaces. Artists, experts and festival visitors embark on a search for its assemblages and their dynamics. In the form of art projects and interdisciplinary mediation formats, CityLeaks makes theoretical and practical knowledge, research and artistic experience possible.
National, international and local artists such as Alex Schweder (USA) and Clemens Klein (JPN/GER), Mathiew Tremblin (FRA), Zoer (FRA), belit sağ (TUR/NLD), Tom Król (GER), Studio Orizzontale (ITA) and others have been invited to the festival.
CityLeaks is an interdisciplinary festival for urban art and culture. The concept of Urban Art unites the most diverse positions from the fields of fine arts, performance and applied arts. The artistic intervention in the urban space is the center of all projects of the festival. The focus is not only on architecture, but also on legal, cultural and political-economic norms and power relations. In addition to the artistic projects, socio-cultural discourses and participation opportunities for laypersons and interested parties determine the festival's activities.
The CityLeaks Festival understands artistic interventions in public space as an act of reclaiming. Thus it aims at a creative appropriation of public space and the creation of new spaces for culture and neighbourly exchange. This year's theme re:public will deal with questions relating to social and sustainable coexistence in cities and urban development close to citizens. The geographical focus of this year's festival will be on the creative district of Ehrenfeld, which, like many others, has been experiencing a strong change in recent years.
