Cologne has a unique location characteristic of photography. The history of photography is reflected in the city's museums and collections, new positions are discussed in the numerous galleries, and art spaces and initiatives provide for the current discourse. The International Photoscene Cologne has been promoting this potential since the 1980s.
The annual Photoszene Festival combines a curated program with a festival that spans the city and involves the photography scene of the Rhineland for active participation.
Unfortunately, the festival 2020 had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 containment measures, but parts of the Photoscene program will take place virtually in 2020, as well as postponed to fall 2020.
In the original festival period 22.-31.2020 the program "Photoszene On Air" will go online. In the virtual space we present artists, exhibitions and picture archives with exciting video clips: www.photoszene.de
The magazine L.Fritz #6 will be published in May 2020 with the theme "Photography & Outer Space" and can be purchased at the Bahnhofsbuchhandlung. Artists' portfolios are accompanied and supported by articles and essays by journalists, art critics and other experts.
As part of the residency programme "Artist Meets Archive", five internationally active artists* are invited to spend time at image archives. Based on their research, they will each prepare an exhibition for the festival in May 2021. Talks with the individual artists will take place in autumn 2020: Artist meets archive
An action to join in: Share your home quarantine photos with #PICTURESFROMHOME2020. Take photos from your own domestic isolation and post them under the hashtag #picturesfromhome2020. This will create a unique contemporary document about this extraordinary and stressful time for all of us.
Save the date: Photoscene Festival from 21 to 30 May 2021
In May 2021 for the first time: "NEXT! The festival of the young photo scene"
