The South Side

South of downtown Cologne, between the Rhine and Vorgebirgspark, lies the South Side—a neighborhood that uniquely blends urban life with historic character. As part of Cologne’s Neustadt, it was developed in the late 19th century on the site of a former Prussian fortification. The dismantling of the fortification walls created room for spacious residential neighborhoods, which were built to a high standard and continue to shape the cityscape to this day.

Residential buildings in the The 19th century Era and Art Nouveau styles lend the South Side its elegant cohesiveness. Ornate facades, tall windows, and wide streets meet a lively, down-to-earth neighborhood. The green spaces are also characteristic: the Volksgarten park with its pond and the Friedenspark preserve remnants of the Prussian forts and provide green open spaces for strolling and relaxing.

History and the Present

The South Side is also a place with a literary history. It is home to the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Böll, who grew up in the neighborhood. His work exemplifies the artistic spirit that has shaped the area since the days of the Cologne Werkschulen. This creative tradition lives on today through the Köln International School of Design (KISD), which continues to give the neighborhood a student-like atmosphere.

Culture and Cuisine

Smaller venues like the Orangerie in the Volksgarten or the Comedia Theater also provide cultural highlights. This is complemented by a high concentration of dining options. In addition to high-quality restaurants and international cuisine, you’ll find classic breweries, authentic pubs, and stylish bars. Some streets also have a Mediterranean flair—evident in family-run tapas bars and trattorias, espresso bars, and cafés that bring a touch of the Mediterranean to the neighborhood.
