Center for design and urban production

The machwerkhaus köln is a vibrant hub for design and urban production, located on the historic factory grounds of the former Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG. Spanning an impressive 20,000 square meters, traditional craftsmanship, innovative design, young startups, and established brands converge to form a vibrant network of creative energy. It is a place where interdisciplinary work and new perspectives come together.

Of particular note is the biannual machwerkschau, which attracts thousands of visitors as part of the Passagen Interior Design Days. Here, prototypes and projects at the intersection of design, technology, and the circular economy are presented. Another highlight is the “machwerktag,” which offers guests a glimpse into the studios every Thursday. These days are more than just a look behind the scenes—they foster exchange through workshops and spontaneous conversations in an inspiring atmosphere.

The machwerkhaus also offers coworking spaces and culinary experiences at Hempies Bistro, which delights guests with its vegan cuisine. The location is not only a production facility but also a hub for creative dialogue and cultural exchange. The machwerkhaus’s residency programs invite designers from around the world to work on their own projects on-site and engage in interdisciplinary exchanges. With its blend of industrial charm and progressive design approach, machwerkhaus köln is a pioneer in the field of the urban creative economy.
