Musical Dome

A striking structure made of steel and blue membrane rises directly next to Cologne’s main train station: the Musical Dome. Since 1996, it has been a defining feature of the Rhine riverfront and has evolved from a temporary venue into a permanent stage for major musical productions. With 1,769 seats, a spacious glass-enclosed foyer, and integrated dining options, the venue serves as an urban cultural space that combines artistic inspiration with the city’s vitality.

Productions Through the Years

Since the 1990s, the Musical Dome has hosted numerous influential musicals and shows. Among the long-running productions are “Saturday Night Fever,” “Jekyll & Hyde,” “The Bodyguard,” and, above all, “We Will Rock You,” which, with around two million attendees, is considered the most successful production. Guest performances such as “Cats,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Thriller – Live,” the Great Chinese National Circus, and dance performances like “Tap Dogs” have also used the Dome as their stage.

Currently running is “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” which has been transforming the interior with a specially designed set since 2022. Following the final performance in the summer of 2026, a new production of “The Phantom of the Opera” will premiere in the fall. This programmatic diversity demonstrates how flexibly the Dome navigates between pop culture, classical musical tradition, and international show formats.

Accessibility and Urban Integration

Behind the glass facade lies a space that incorporates barrier-free pathways and seating areas for wheelchair users. Its location directly at a major transport hub makes it easy to reach by public transport and shapes the unique dynamism of this place, where mobility, musical theatre, and urban development converge.
