Today, the PARKCafé in the Rheinpark once again combines historical architecture with contemporary use. The building was constructed in 1957 for the Federal Garden Show and follows the characteristic kidney-shaped design language of architect Rambald von Steinbüchel-Rheinwall. The building was unused for decades until it became accessible again in 2022 following a comprehensive conservation restoration. The restoration precisely restored the original color concept and the lightness of the post-war design while also creating a barrier-free interior.
Since its reopening, the PARK Café has evolved in terms of content. New operators have been running the establishment since 2025 and have opted for a more modern concept that includes gastronomic updates as well as an expanded event program. Additional food offerings, an adapted drinks profile and a carefully lightened design bring the café closer to today's gastronomic standards without distorting the historical identity of the building.
At the same time, a place is being created that is more culturally active than before. Regular formats such as exhibitions, workshops, readings and smaller music and dance events are planned, taking advantage of the location in the Rheinpark and interpreting the building as an open platform. The large terraces and the view of the Rhine also allow the building to be used as an event location for private and public occasions.
In this way, a former post-war pavilion is once again transformed into a lively meeting place that combines history, natural space and the urban present.
