Cologne is cosmopolitan, hospitable and safe. Nevertheless, crime cannot be ruled out. Christmas markets in particular attract not only many visitors, but also pickpockets. Wherever many people come together and there is a crowd, they look for their victims. Dirty tricks, jostling and money exchange tricks are their best known tricks. Again and again they manage to steal money, jewellery and cheque cards from their victims' wallets, clothes and bags with a sophisticated procedure.
Usually they act with several persons. While one offender distracts the victim, the other takes advantage of the inattentiveness, reaches out and hands over the acquired property to a third person, who then moves away from the actual crime.
The circle of perpetrators is offered numerous possibilities for the perpetration of pickpockets. For example, journeys by public transport, shopping trips and visits to events can be less pleasant. You should therefore consider a few safety aspects.
Take only the most necessary cash and valuables with you. The best way to protect yourself is to carry your valuables close to your body, for example in the inner pockets of your jacket or the front trouser pockets. Neck pouches and fanny packs are also suitable. Keep your handbags and rucksacks closed at all times and always carry rucksacks at the front in the crowd.
If you become a victim or witness of a crime, contact the police immediately. In any case, report the crime to the police!
In Cologne you can do this around the clock at the police station or online. (Only in German)
