The Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in Germany. More than 10,000 animals are at home here. This makes it one of the most diverse in Europe. His motto is: "Enthusiastic for animals." One of the main attractions is the elephant park, which opened in 2004. It is the largest north of the Alps, currently 13 thick skins live here. Just as spectacular is the hippodom completed in 2010 for the 150-year zoo anniversary. The spacious adventure house shows an African river landscape in which, among other things, hippos, nilkrocodiles and Sitatunga antelopes live. In 2014, the Clemenshof opened its doors. The lovingly designed replica of a small farmhouse typical of the region with petting zoo for children gives a home to rare domestic species.
Modern animal estates, historic buildings and stylish parkland
The rainforest house opened in 2000 is also particularly popular with visitors. It shows animals and plants from one of the most endangered natural paradises on earth, the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Built in the mid-80s, the Jungle House for apes allows visitors to observe the primates from close range without disturbing them. Thus, the Cologne Zoo continues to set standards throughout Europe to this day. In the aquarium built in 1971, visitors experience countless fish species, reptiles and insects on three floors.
The historic animal houses are also attractive. Among them are the monkey rock of 1914, the elephant house of 1863, built in Moorish style, or the now called "South America House" of 1899, which is architecturally modeled on a Russian Orthodox church. The combination of old buildings, modern houses and the parkland landscaped by the zoo gardening with great attention to detail makes the Cologne Zoo particularly charming and attractive.
Daily feeding shows at sea lions, groundsmen, raccoons & co., the air show with breathtaking deposits of rare birds of prey, the raging on our huge playground and a delicious snack in the new zoogastronomy round off the day perfectly.
++The commented feedings are currently canceled until further notice. The petting zoo will also remain closed for the time being.++
