St. Maria in Lyskirchen is the smallest of Cologne's twelve Romanesque churches and the only one to be built as a parish church. It is situated directly on the Rhine, between the Deutz and the Severin Brücke bridges.
In the course of its existence, since the early 13th century, it has experienced relatively little change and was the only Romanesque church not to be destroyed in the Second World War.
The central focus are the retained ceiling paintings and murals from the 13th century. In the central nave a typological cycle is completely retained. Here created illustrations of events in the Old and New Testament are shown. The “Lovely Madonna” and the glass painting fragments of the late Gothic times complete the image in the interior alongside the modern glass paintings in the chancel.
