Athletic exploration through Cologne's green east

Far from the hustle and bustle of urban life lies a cycling tour that invigorates both body and mind: the “Ambient Gravel Tour” combines athletic challenges with the beauty of untouched landscapes and a touch of artistic inspiration. This route appeals to those eager to experience the harmonious interplay of motion, nature, and creative expression.

The starting point of the tour is Cologne/Bonn Airport, whose architecture once inspired Brian Eno to create ambient music. From here, the journey begins towards the Wahner Heide, one of Germany’s largest nature reserves. The varied route – ranging from gravel paths to narrow trails – winds through sandy heath landscapes and offers the opportunity to observe landed planes at lookout points. This section unites extraordinary perspectives with the tranquility of nature, appealing equally to aviation enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The path continues uphill towards Rösrath. Along the way, small villages and the idyllic Sülz Valley await discovery. A perfect spot for a break is Eulenbroich Castle, with its historical setting and a quaint café inviting visitors to linger. Alternatively, snacks can be conveniently picked up on the main road, ideal for a picnic amidst the peaceful surroundings of the Königsforst.

At the Königsforst, one of Cologne’s green lungs, the heart of the tour unfolds. This route through the impressive mixed forest predominantly follows the old Sülzbahn railway track, passing clearings, ponds, and babbling brooks. It is here that Wolfgang Voigt found inspiration for his ambient techno project GAS, artistically merging music and the experience of nature.

The tour’s destination is Monte Troodelöh, Cologne’s highest elevation at 118 meters. The subsequent descent leads to the “Schmitzebud,” a popular meeting point for cyclists and connoisseurs. This iconic pizza stand invites you to reflect on the impressions of the tour while enjoying food and drinks. From here, there’s the option to take line 9 back to the city center in comfort or to continue the tour on two wheels through the “Schäl Sick” (the local term for Cologne’s eastern side).

This cycling tour is more than just an athletic challenge – it’s a symbolic journey through history, creative influence, and a deep connection to nature. With a length of approximately 30 kilometers and a dynamic elevation profile, it’s perfect for anyone ready to step out of their comfort zone and embrace new experiences. Along the way, there’s plenty of time to take a break, savor the moment, and discover the link between urban cultural life and the green landscapes of the city’s east.
