Traces of a Transatlantic Modernism

To mark its 50th anniversary, Museum Ludwig presents a major exhibition on the art of the international Black diaspora and its connections to European modernism. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, literature and music from international collections enter into dialogue with works from the museum’s own collection—opening up new perspectives on exchange, migration, identity and belonging.

The title refers to the African American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, who studied in Berlin and later visited Cologne. His writings, along with testimonies from other voices of the Black diaspora, accompany the exhibition. From the Harlem Renaissance to the Négritude movement, the exhibition reveals how Black artists challenged Eurocentric perspectives and developed new cultural narratives—right up to the present day, including works by James Gregory Atkinson, Mildred Thompson, Herbert Gentry and Iba Ndiaye.

Museum Ludwig is located directly beside Cologne Cathedral and close to the Rhine—ideal for your cultural trip to Cologne.
