Cologne on a winter's day...

Exhibition

A winter experience for the whole family at the Cologne City Museum

From November 11, 2025, to March 22, 2026, the Cologne City Museum invites you to an interactive winter wonderland. The open space format "Cologne on a Winter's Day..." encourages you to rediscover winter in Cologne. This event focuses on the sensory experience of historical winters in the city, featuring dangerous ice walks and historic cold records, as well as how people used to brace themselves against bitter winters. Visitors can draw inspiration from historical photographs and illustrations showcasing the festivals, games, and sports that are integral to Köln's winter culture. Families particularly will enjoy the lovingly illustrated character Wilhelm "Willy" Wasserspeier and his Willy Winter Pass.

The interactive stations emphasize participation: whether it's tabletop ice curling, winter quiz buzzers, or snow globe magic, both young and old explorers can engage directly. Museum Director Dr. Matthias Hamann highlights the importance of this presentation: "We want to make winter in Cologne tangible, not just show it." Curator Johanna Cremer adds that the open space in the foyer is open to all, without an entrance fee, and features exciting workshops and readings in the accompanying program.

The free family program offers additional highlights such as tours, readings, and creative workshops to experience the winter in Cologne up close. Current dates can be viewed on the museum's website. The Open Space reflects the historic roots and innovative spirit of the Cologne City Museum, continually bringing cultural topics into focus.
