Paving the way for change

The exhibition "Paving the way for change" is dedicated to the profound and often overlooked role of the first women's movement in Cologne. It sheds light on the developments of this movement, which originated in 1848 and gained momentum in the late 19th century. The focus is on the collective efforts of women who fought for basic rights such as education and political participation. At a time when they were denied political co-determination, these women worked courageously in the background for a fairer future. The exhibition in the Historical Archive with the Rheinisches Bildarchiv takes visitors through the stationary and moving moments of the women's movement and traces its influence on education and society. While the First World War and the Weimar Republic were characterized by social commitment, the seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 marked a turning point. However, the ideas and values survived the Second World War and created the basis for new movements. The exhibition can be visited free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday. It not only brings the past to life, but also reflects the ongoing struggle for equality.
