With an ambitious double concert, Cologne Jazzweek 2025 presents two extraordinary sound experiments that interweave improvised and composed music.
Kit Downes, the festival's British artist in residence, follows on from his acclaimed concert series "Dr. Snap" from the Amsterdam Bimhuis in "Snap II". Once again featuring carefully selected instrumentalists-including Argentinian saxophonist Camila Nebbia and percussionist Andrew Lisle-Downes explores the boundaries between notated compositions and intuitive improvisation in a reduced formation, combining dense soundscapes, fragmented melodic arcs and energetic rhythmic patterns.
Fabian Dudek, Cologne saxophonist and composer, presents his new suite "Night By Night" as a complementary deepening of his cycle "Day By Day". Dudek's ensemble focuses on exciting tonal and rhythmic ambivalences through a dynamic rhythm section with two players and a harmonic spectrum of Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, piano and electric guitar. In current social awareness, the program reflects musical openness and creative diversity, consistently integrates individual expressiveness into collective artistic processes and encourages both close listening and reflection on musical language as a mirror of contemporary social reality.
