Double concert as part of the Cologne Jazzweek 2025:
Emily Wittbrodt (cello) and Annie Bloch (organ) take Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's work as the starting point for their Mendelssohn project. The focus is on his Prelude and Fugue in C minor (op. 37), the virtuoso, improvisatory piece by Mendelssohn that specifically acknowledges Bach's compositional legacy. For Wittbrodt and Bloch, it is precisely the openness of the original improvisation, which was "congealed" in the process of being written down, that forms the starting point for an intensive contemporary engagement with the art of musical rethinking, further development and different ways of thinking.
The Supersonic Orchestra around the Norwegian percussionist Gard Nilssen stands in contrast to this. The result of a commissioned constellation, it transcends space and musical expectations with a powerful sound. Through carefully balanced microtiming and variable dynamics, the orchestra transforms the sheer power of its large instrumentation into delicately layered sound spaces. The swelling and subsiding orchestral sound masses of the ensemble demonstrate a musical practice between controlled composition and alert improvisation that goes far beyond the usual categories of "loud and quiet".
Both parts of the concert show that jazz today can be defined not only as a genre of improvisation, but also as a philosophical reflection on the relationship between spontaneous inspiration and compositional structure.
