The Hotspot.Koeln project lets visitors and residents use WLAN to surf the Internet free of charge at popular downtown locations and in the city’s customer centres.
The Cologne Tourist Board and the Köln Plus Partner association are using donations from sponsors to install additional hotspots on other popular streets and squares along the downtown river bank up to the Rheinauhafen and the Rheinboulevard.
How Hotspot.Koeln works:
Logging into the network is easy. Users can begin surfing immediately after they have entered their name, e-mail address and mobile phone number into an online registration form. The free service can be used for up to one hour, after which the user is automatically logged off. However, users can immediately dial into the system again and logon as often as they wish. All of the WLAN antennas have a 100 Mbit broadband connection that allows them to handle up to 500 users at the same time. Additional antennas are installed at highly frequented locations in order to increase their capacity.
