The monument to Josef Cardinal Frings on Laurenzplatz in Cologne, erected in 1998, is an impressive testimony to the city's recent history. The sculptor Kurt Arentz created the larger-than-life bronze bust, which commemorates Frings' work as Archbishop of Cologne (1942-1969). Known for his courageous sermons during National Socialism, Frings had a decisive influence on the moral and social climate of the post-war period.
Ethics and society
Frings' New Year's Eve sermon in 1946 made him unforgettable. In it, he expressed understanding for the needs of people in times of scarce resources, giving rise to the Cologne verb "fringsen". This speech elevated human necessity above bureaucratic hurdles, an idea that is still echoed in social and ethical debates today. The memorial is not only a place of remembrance, but also a symbol of the debate on issues of social justice.Useful Information
