St. Agnes

Church

The second-largest church in the city after Cologne Cathedral

A building like St. Agnes offers a multifaceted perspective on the relationship between urban development, the culture of remembrance, and sacred architecture. The church was built between 1896 and 1903 as a Neo-Gothic hall church and continues to define Neusser Platz, which once lay on the edge of the city’s expansion at that time. It was commissioned by the building contractor Peter Joseph Roeckerath, who wanted to create a visible memorial to his late wife, Agnes. This biographical dimension lends the building a special narrative depth, which is also reflected in its dedication to Saint Agnes.

Architectural Form and Style

The structure follows the principles of Neo-Gothic architecture: a three-nave hall, a striking transept, and a tower that is deliberately designed without a spire. The combination of light sandstone, tuff, and accents of red sandstone creates a finely balanced color palette. This choice evokes an era in which medieval architectural language was reinterpreted—not as a nostalgic gesture, but as an expression of a modern self-image of urban communities.

Historical Layers

World War II left behind severe destruction; it was not until the 1950s that the interior could be used again. Some furnishings, such as the baptismal font and the Altar of St. Peter, were preserved and connect past liturgical traditions with later layers of reconstruction. The choir windows by stained-glass artist Wilhelm Buschulte enrich this historic space with contemporary visual language.
