Public Art

The Obvious & the Subtle to Admire and Contemplate

Stay curious and attentive during your visit to Cologne – art in public spaces gives you the opportunity for a cultural and artistic break with reflection opportunities during a city tour, a museum visit or shopping spree.

Whether it's the oversized ice cream cone near Schildergasse, which perhaps announces the ice age of our consumption – or subtle hints at the permanent changeability of the world that inspire reflection. And critical examination of the city and traffic, one's own identity or sculptural memories of a different time, for example, when we asked ourselves: How does sand get to the beach – and happily received the answer in the WDR-Maus program.

You encounter art in public spaces in many places in Cologne, inviting you to reflect or perhaps to pause and interpret it together: is this art and can it tell us something? Well-known artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Dani Karavan, Wolf Vostell, Merlin Bauer, George Warren Rickey and others have a permanent presence in public spaces in Cologne.
