Cologne’s theatres leave no wish unfulfilled. No matter whether you’re a fan of traditional folk plays, political satire, independent theatre or exclusive comedy shows, Cologne has something to offer every theatre lover.

Cologne’s three municipal theatres are the Kölner Schauspielhaus, the Hänneschen-Theater and the Kölner Oper (Cologne Opera House), including the Kinderoper (children’s opera). Besides the municipal theatres, Cologne has dozens of independent theatres that are an important part of the city’s cultural landscape.

One of the most famous of these independent theatres is certainly the Volkstheater Millowitsch. This family-run enterprise has existed since the mid-19th century. Originally founded as a puppet theatre, it was converted into a normal theatre in 1894. Since then it has specialized in comedies spoken in the Cologne dialect.

Cologne also has several outstanding cabaret theatres such as the Senftöpfchen and the COMEDIA Theater.
