HELLERS Brauhaus
A Kölsch in hand, the buzz of voices from the Kwartier Latäng right outside the door, and inside, a winter garden that truly lives up to its name: HELLERS thrives on its location, its history, and a unique sense of space—right in the heart of one of Cologne’s liveliest nightlife districts.
HELLERS Brauhaus has been a fixture on Roonstraße since 1996. In the past, beer was brewed on-site; today, the focus is on dining. Especially with the house-brewed HELLERS Kölsch. You can enjoy it on-site, fresh from the tap—as a classic Kölsch or naturally cloudy Wiess—in the rustic, cozy taproom or in the ever-lush conservatory, affectionately known as the “Green Heart of HELLERS.” This is complemented by rustic brewery-style or Mediterranean cuisine with a weekly menu that changes with the seasons.
When preparing its various dishes, HELLERS consciously and increasingly relies on regional products: eggs from the Bergisches Land, bread from a Cologne bakery, and meat from regionally sourced, animal-welfare-compliant farms. Even the coffee at HELLERS is roasted in Cologne.
Spirits are produced at the historic Heinrich Habbel distillery in North Rhine-Westphalia. HELLERS Kallendresser is also made there.
The house’s own herbal liqueur stands out just as confidently from comparable products. The bronze Kallendresser in the bar area—which the junior manager permanently installed there years ago—proves that this characteristic applies not only to the liqueur but also to the HELLERS concept.

The Kitchen: HELLERS’ Menu
“Himmel un Ääd,” homemade sauces, or freshly breaded schnitzel—HELLERS offers classic brewery fare along with Mediterranean dishes, a rotating weekly menu, and seasonal specialties—such as the goose dinner in winter. Vegan options are also available. When preparing its various dishes, HELLERS consciously and increasingly relies on regional products: eggs from the Bergisches Land, bread from a Cologne bakery, and meat from regionally sourced, animal-welfare-compliant farms. House specialty: a house-made herbal liqueur
Mild, smooth, made from over 100 herbs, seeds, and roots, and produced at the Habbel distillery, HELLERS Kallendresser takes its name from the famousand curious figure with a bare bottom at the Alter Markt, which is often interpreted as a figurative expression of the citizens’ discontent with the authorities. The house’s own herbal liqueur stands out just as confidently from comparable products. In the Heart of the Kwartier Latäng
As the successor to the generically alluring “Deutsches Bierhaus,” the HELLERS Brauhaus—with its own brewery next door—has been located in the heart of the Kwartier Latäng since 1996, named almost ambiguously after Paris’s Quartier Latin. The Great Synagogue and Zülpicher Straße, with its pubs, clubs, and bars, are just a few minutes’ walk away.Catering Outlet: the HELLERS Volksgarten
Located right next to the historic Volksgarten pond—which was renovated in 2023—the HELLERS Volksgarten serves food and drinks throughout the summer and offers day-trippers, whether traveling with or without their families, a relaxing place to sit amidst the greenery. There’s also an ice cream stand and the option to go on a pedal boat ride.HELLERS: Pub-breweries and a family business
Many years before HELLERS was founded, Hubert Heller ran his restaurant on Roonstraße: in 1978 as the “Rottweiler,” then as the “Deutsches Bierhaus,” and finally, after the founding of the HELLER in-house brewery in 1996, as the HELLERS Brauhaus—one of Cologne’s few pub breweries. Since 2010, his daughter Anna has been managing the brewery, the Brauhaus, and Hellers Volksgarten.Useful Information
