The first time you enter the café – whose name translates to “Where is Tom?” – expect a surprise: the high-ceilinged space features a second floor that’s been installed at the back. Impressive! Then, prepare to be equally impressed by the oversized red lighting installation that spans both floors. It’s only at third glance that you see the cake display, although it’s right opposite the front door. The choice is enormous, so before trying to work out where Tom is, concentrate on making your cake selection. I opt for a white chocolate cheesecake, which turns out to be delicious. The Tom mystery is solved by the menu: Tom’s mum is the founder of Bundesvereinigung Lebenshilfe, Germany’s largest self-help organisation for people with mental disabilities and their families. The café is the first project by Perspektive Lebenshilfe, a Cologne-based charity, and is staffed with people with disabilities. Definitely a cause I can get behind!
