The Severinsviertel is located south of downtown Cologne, between the Rheinauhafen and the Volksgarten. Having developed along Severinstraße, it is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. As far back as ancient times, an important transportation and trade route led out of the city from this very spot. The striking Severinstorburg, once part of the medieval city fortifications and Cologne’s southern city gate—a stone symbol of both departure and arrival—bears witness to the enduring significance of this major transportation corridor.
History and the Present
Historically, the neighborhood was characterized by crafts, small businesses, and a close-knit community. Later, the Stollwerck chocolate factory was added. This down-to-earth character has been preserved to this day. At the same time, the neighborhood also took on a distinct artistic flair in the 20th century. The nearby Kölner Werkschulen attracted creative minds whose spirit blended with the typical Cologne way of life. This is where the band BAP got its start, and where Trude Herr ran her theater—places where music, the stage, and the local scene forged a special bond.
