Latin American Song Art: From Modernism to the Present

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, “Art Songs from Latin America” will bring an extraordinary chamber music program to the o-ton Concert Hall in Cologne. Under the direction of Brazilian composer Rafael Marino Arcaro, soprano Hannah Dienes-Williams and the Utak Ensemble will present works from Brazil, Chile, Peru, Cuba, and Mexico.

The concert spans a musical arc from 1927 to 2026, connecting early modernism with contemporary voices. The program features world and German premieres by composers such as Dinorá de Carvalho, Tomás Brantmayer, Sofía Alvarez, A. García Caturla, Carlos Chávez, and Rafael Marino Arcaro. The result is a cross-generational encounter with Latin American music that brings together diverse musical languages, cultural influences, and poetic perspectives.

The centerpiece is the world premiere of “what i learned from manoel de barros: / o que aprendi com manoel de barros:.” In this work, Rafael Marino Arcaro sets Manoel de Barros’ 1998 poetry collection to music, transforming its delicate language into a bold vocal soundscape.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available only at the box office; advance reservations by email are recommended.
