The exhibition “Ballroom: A Celebration of Community” offers insights into a culture born out of resistance and solidarity. Originally emerging in New York in the 1960s and 70s, the ballroom scene created a safe space for Black and Latinx trans people who faced discrimination in other social and queer contexts. Today, ballroom is a global movement that celebrates identity, creativity, and empowerment.
The exhibition highlights today's local ballroom scene and showcases the people who shape this culture on the ground. Photographs by Cupid 007 and personal stories offer an intimate glimpse into the power and diversity of the scene. Curated by Chris Tshiaba with Hannah Schmitz-Stevens, the exhibition showcases not only artistic expression, but also the social significance of self-empowerment and belonging. On view from May 3 to June 6 as part of a free exhibition, it reflects the contemporary relevance of a global movement that celebrates community and authenticity.
