After Isaiah Collier and his formation The Chosen Few made their first guest appearance at Cologne Jazzweek in 2022, the saxophonist, who was born in Chicago in 1998, quickly became a celebrated voice of contemporary jazz.
At his 2025 concert, he will present the music from his latest album "Parallel Universe" - a work that is decidedly politically charged and artistically condenses the cultural experiences and social realities of the African-American diaspora. Collier's compositional approach deliberately and subtly transcends the boundaries of jazz by integrating soulful gospel structures just as naturally as elements of funk, blues and hip-hop as well as influences from Afro-Caribbean and Cuban traditions.
In Cologne, he is joined by musical comrades-in-arms of the highest caliber: In addition to soul singer Jimetta Rose, also from Chicago, Corey Wilkes, once trumpeter of the style-defining Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and guitarist Michael Damani, who is deeply influenced by blues idioms, will also be performing. This ensemble is complemented by Collier's proven formation with James Russell Sims on drums, Micah Collier on bass and Julian Davis Reid on piano - musicians who bring his wealth of ideas to fruition with eloquent improvisation and rhythmic precision.
The Cologne Jazzweek thus enables an intensive encounter of profound musical reflection and cultural diversity, embedded in the urban flair of a city that always makes aware and emphasizes the traces of its diverse history.
