A comprehensive exhibition in Cologne explores a multifaceted portrait of the artist Herbert Döring-Spengler, whose work has been pushing the boundaries of traditional photographic techniques since the 1970s.
His experimentally processed Polaroid photographs form the centerpiece of the exhibition. Through deliberate physical interventions, such as bending, thermal manipulation and the dissolution of individual carrier layers, works are created whose visual language emancipates itself from classic photographic concepts and develops painterly qualities.
In addition to large-format art prints, Döring-Spengler's series of "Diazetten" also unfolds a critical examination of contemporary visual narratives: layers of superimposed newspaper images and text fragments intertwine dialogically to create pointed reinterpretations of social contexts.
The exhibition highlights central works of his oeuvre and provides in-depth insights into the technical and intellectual dimensions of Döring-Spengler's photographic position by means of a video interview presented for the first time. This provides a concise picture of the artist as a constant border crosser between aesthetics and technology, who combines social observation with individual, creative responsibility.
