To mark the World Cup, the German Sports & Olympic Museum is hosting a special exhibition from June 2 through September 1, 2026.
How does a sports jersey become a piece of German soccer history—and a piece of fabric that carries memories?
Long traditionally designed in black and white, the national team’s uniforms have been refined just as carefully as the tactics on the field since the mid-1980s. Changing cuts, materials, color schemes, and the placement of emblems and logos reflect the trends of their time and provide the backdrop for stories—both big and small—on the field and beyond. As a result, jerseys have long been more than just sportswear: they are a canvas for expression, cult objects, bestsellers, and coveted collector’s items.
In our exhibition marking the FIFA World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, we present a selection of historic jerseys—some of them “match-worn”—from Andreas Schallenmüller’s impressive and valuable collection, thereby showcasing a unique, subtle history of soccer.
For dreams and nightmares are made of the “fabric of the nation.” A closet full of memories and emotions—from goosebumps to a tear in the buttonhole.
