The exhibition "nevertheless here!" opens up a previously seldom explored perspective within remembrance culture: It sheds light on the destinies of those children born from forbidden friendships and intimate relationships between Germans and prisoners of war or forced laborers during National Socialism. Long concealed and tabooed biographies are now brought out of the shadows, giving visibility and recognition to life stories which, until now, have barely been noted scientifically and culturally. Conceived by the Sandbostel Camp Memorial, this exhibition project brings together more than 20 biographies of affected individuals from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. It not only highlights the individual experiences of social exclusion and everyday discrimination in post-war societies but also vividly and self-critically retraces the persecution experienced by their parents during the Nazi era. Thus, the exhibition raises fundamental questions about remembrance practices and society’s handling of the legacy of historical guilt. This project is funded and supported as part of the NS Injustice Educational Agenda by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" (EVZ), and the German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
