The Queer Coral Reef of Dreams

The Röschen Sitzung is one of the distinctive voices of Cologne’s alternative carnival scene. It grew out of the legendary Rosa Sitzung, which for ten years served as a gay and lesbian counterpoint to the traditional carnival, creating a stir, fostering a great atmosphere, and sending a clear message under the rainbow flag. This format was conceived and shaped by dedicated figures such as Hella von Sinnen, among others; later, the Rosa Sitzung grew into a major stage spectacle featuring multiple sessions and WDR recordings.

After the previous collaboration ended in 2004, the artists returned to the format’s roots. The large-scale “Rosa Sitzung” evolved into a more intimate, smaller, and more immediate version. The “Röschen Sitzung” was born. To this day, it stands for Carnival with attitude, humor, and a loving look at the quirky, colorful, and sometimes wonderfully absurd sides of life.

Anyone looking to experience Cologne’s Carnival beyond traditional session formats will find an event here with a special history, a queer perspective, and plenty of tongue-in-cheek stage energy. The “Röschen Sitzung” combines entertainment, scene culture, and the Cologne way of life into an evening that showcases just how diverse Carnival in Cologne can be.
