Cologne’s Stadtbahn Line 1 stops right at your destination for the day: Sportpark Höhenberg. From there, it’s just a few hundred metres on foot, taking you into the greenery—to the home ground of Viktoria Köln 1904 e.V., in the heart of Merheimer Heide, surrounded by meadows and trees on Cologne’s right bank of the Rhine.
On home match days, red-and-white shirts mingle with walkers here, and the closer you get, the clearer it becomes: it’s almost time for the round thing to go into the square thing.
Open stands, the pitch right in front of you: always close to the action
Inside, you’ll find a stadium where everything is within easy reach. Just over 8,300 people can fit into the covered main stand, the open terraces, and the tubular steel stand behind the goal. There used to be a running track here, but it was removed decades ago and the pitch was moved closer to the stands. So whether you are sitting or standing, you are right in the middle of the action—on a pitch with history, too: around the 2005 Confederations Cup and the 2006 World Cup, national teams including France and Japan trained here; in 2020, Manchester United used this sports park to prepare for a Europa League semi-final.
“Vik, Vik, Viktoria!”: the game unfolds right in front of you
At kick-off, the voices grow louder—“Vik, Vik, Viktoria!” rings out from the stands, across the pitch and far beyond the stadium walls. In between, you hear shouts from the field, the thud of shots, and the spectators’ enthusiastic reactions. In a stadium of this size, you never lose sight of the action and can always follow how an attacking move develops.
The club of the Schäl Sick
Viktoria Köln sees itself as a club of the Schäl Sick—the side of the Rhine where Cologne Cathedral does not stand. The club’s roots go back to 1904, when FC Germania was founded in Kalk. Over the decades, clubs from Kalk, Mülheim and Dellbrück joined forces in a series of mergers to become a major force on the right bank of the Rhine. In 2010, following the insolvency of its predecessor, the current club had to start again at the very bottom, in Kreisliga D—just nine years later, Viktoria Köln had returned to professional football.
Tip: Only the main stand is covered. If the weather forecast does not look sunny, make sure to get a seat there—all other areas are out in the open.
If you enjoy the lively, exuberant atmosphere of Cologne home match days, check when other Cologne clubs are looking to make the most of home advantage, such as 1. FC Köln, Fortuna Köln—or, if you are an ice hockey fan, the Kölner Haie.
