Located only a minute’s walk from the Cathedral, the Late Romanesque St. Andreas Church is in the midst of Cologne’s banking district. St. Andreas was founded by Archbishop Bruno around 960 as a collegiate church. At that time the building was located outside the city walls.
A striking feature of the current St. Andreas Church is its blending of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The Romanesque section contains lavish ornamental sculptural elements, whereas the Late Gothic choir impresses viewers with its sober elegance. The St. Mary’s Chapel contains scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary as well as an important trove of Gothic wall paintings. In addition, the darkly shining choir windows from the late 19th century create a distinctive spatial atmosphere.
