Museum and Church Experiences

Of the twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne, St. Maria in Lyskirchen is the smallest and only one that was built as a parish church. In the course of its existence (from the early 13th century) it underwent the least comparable changes. In the Second World War it was the only Romanesque church in Cologne not destroyed. The highlights in the church are the preserved ceiling and wall paintings from the 13th century. A complete typological cycle is preserved in the nave. It shows interrelated events of the Old and New Testaments. The "Beautiful Madonna" and the late Gothic stained-glass fragments round off the interior's appearance, alongside the modern stained-glass windows in the choir.
