Lachende Kölnarena 2027

Kölsch, confetti - jolly hustle and bustle and your own picnic basket

You can spot them on the way to the arena: people with glitter on their faces, costumes thrown over winter jackets – and a bag that looks more like it’s meant for a family outing than a stadium show. Inside, there might be bread rolls, meatballs, potato salad. Maybe they’re even carrying a small party keg under their arm. Or perhaps a slightly larger “Pittermännchen” with 10 liters of Kölsch ready to tap.

And it’s exactly this mix that makes the Lachende Kölnarena so unmistakably Cologne: while the show unfolds on stage, the crowd in the stands sings along, clinks glasses, and casually opens up a small buffet. Bringing your own food and drinks isn’t just allowed here – it’s part of the tradition, as long as everything is glass-free.

What makes the Lachende so special: six hours of pure carnival

The Lachende Kölnarena is a multi-day carnival series held at LANXESS arena in Cologne-Deutz – for many, the must-attend event between the start of the year and Carnival Sunday. Each date means around six hours of celebrating: dancing, swaying arm in arm, handing out kisses (Bützchen), singing along. On stage, you’ll find the “who’s who” of Cologne’s carnival scene: bands, speakers, traditional dance troupes – and of course the Cologne triumvirate (Dreigestirn), one of the emotional highlights.

And yes: the scale is impressive. Across the dates spread over several weeks, more than 500 performers and two large orchestras take part.

Self-catering: practical & sociable

Self-catering is the most famous “exception to the rule” of this event series: you’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks – but no glass containers. If you prefer, you can of course buy everything on site. That means you design your evening exactly the way you like it – and can even plan it in a resource-conscious way by bringing only what you truly want. Many guests who arrive with picnic baskets, Kölsch kegs, or snacks are happy to share with the people sitting next to them. Sociability is guaranteed.

From the “Lachende Sporthalle” to the Kölnarena: a piece of carnival history

It all started in 1965 – back then under the name “Lachende Sporthalle” in Cologne’s former sports hall, which has since been demolished. Since 1999, the series has been held in the former Kölnarena, today’s LANXESS arena. The Lachende – often simply called that – is known as the “largest carnival session in the world,” with around 10,000 revelers attending a single event.

The current record: on February 7, 2026, 18,500 people celebrated at one single date, according to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger – more than ever before.

And by the way: there’s a dedicated event series for children and families, too – the Lachende PÄNZarena. Since 2017.
