The Architectural Eye | epochal – global
The Museum of Applied Arts presents the exhibition “The Architectural Eye” until September 27, featuring a comprehensive retrospective of the architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch. On display are large-format works and serial image series that highlight architecture as a phenomenon spanning eras and cultures, emphasizing its relevance today.
For around 40 years, Esch has photographed around the world—working at the intersection of commissioned projects and independent artistic practice. Curated by Raimund Stecker, the exhibition creates dialogues: Cologne Cathedral meets the Chrysler Building, Pompeii encounters the Stuttgart 21 project, mud-brick architecture in Yemen faces high-rises in Asia. Between antiquity and the present, between Lapland and Sydney, a multi-layered perspective on architecture unfolds—with Cologne and the Rhine-Ruhr region serving as its central point of reference.
