Cologne offers amateur athletes a wide range of activities: football, golf, cycling, jogging through one of the numerous parks and horseback riding, to name just a few.
As a venue for world and European championships for a variety of sports, Cologne has earned an international reputation for excellence. Past events include the games for the FIFA Football World Cup in 2006, the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in 2010 and 2017 and the IHF Handball World Championship in 2007. The Gay Games in 2010, the European Women’s Field Hockey Championship in 1999 and the Rowing World Cup in 1998 were also held in Cologne.
